The inevitability of the Greek Myths

"We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts, have their root in Greece." —Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1792-1822, Hellas

  • The Greek myths are at the dawn of Western civilization, which was built upon the remains of Greek-Roman civilization, which was in turn built upon the ruins of the Mycenaean civilization.
  • Homer, who emerged around 800 BC, is regarded as the author of the first work of literature that Western civilization may count as its own.
  • Large sections of Western culture and art—music, painting and literature—refer to the Greek myths or have been inspired by them.
  • The Greek myths are concerned with fundamental and imperishable life issues.

Elucidation

Myth is no arbitrary invention, but the account of the inspired poet, who, enjoying natural authority, became the founder of culture. His account, rich in contents and form, tilled the land on which humanity built her cultural life. Culture is a child of myth. When culture languishes, civilization, which rests on culture, is endangered.

The myths and the notion of the sacred reach man not through whim or intellectual theory, but through poetic inspiration which unveils the twin heights of beauty and significance. By advancing the cognition of forms, the acute observation of the world, and the veracious comprehension of human motivation, the myths allow serene navigation across the fundamental issues of life.

Therefore when we say 'myth', we do not mean 'nonsense' or 'lies', since upon such shortcomings no culture could ever have been built. Instead we mean by 'myth' the most luminous representations ever to seize the mind and heart of mankind, sustaining the spiritual life of generations, the art of ages, and the very pillars of society.

Features

Nature of this site

The Greek Mythology Link is a collection of the Greek myths written on line by Carlos Parada, author of the book Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology, published in 1993 (available at Amazon).

The Greek Mythology Link is concerned with the creative, artistic, literary and inspiring aspects of the Greek myths [see articles linked above]. The network created by genealogy has been given particular attention, as well as some structural aspects partly derived from it. The information provided in this site is based on original sources [see below].

The Greek Mythology Link is not normally concerned with the historical, religious, liturgical, anthropological, archaeological, philosophical, ideological, sociological, linguistic, or psychoanalytical approaches to Greek Mythology. Comparative mythology and literary analysis are not the main concern of this site either. References to these or similar analytical areas are occasional.

Sources

The Greek Mythology Link is partly based on Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology by Carlos Parada. A list of libraries in the USA and other countries where this book can be found is included in that link.

Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology and the Greek Mythology Link are exclusively based on original sources, that is, authors from the period between ca. 800 BC and ca. AD 600 [see Bibliography].

An illustrated CD-ROM version of Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology was released in 1997, but the more recently released backups of the Greek Mythology Link are listed at Backups.

Contents

The Greek Mythology Link contains Texts, Images, Maps and Charts.

How the material is organized

The material is divided into Central Pages and Topics.

Central Pages
Click to view the contents of each central page

Ca. no. of pages:

Biographies

Links to pages describing the lives and deeds of gods, goddesses, heroes, heroines, or any other creatures. Compare with GROUPS and Dictionary below.

+200

GROUPS

'GROUPS' are collective entries, such as AMAZONS and ARGONAUTS. Each group gathers a number of characters sharing common features. There are ca. 100 groups, and any given character may appear in several. Groups are consistently written in capital letters.

120

Places & Peoples

Geographical reference including the mythical history of places and peoples such as Olympia or Laestrygonians.

40

Dictionary

A to Z records organized in two sections: Characters and GROUPS (6520 entries), and a Geographical Reference (1184 entries).

31

Indices

One Index of mythical characters, and another of names of places and peoples. See here how names are spelt or spelled in this site (useful when making a search).

Images &
List of Albums

Images in the Greek Mythology Link either illustrate the texts, or are distributed into Albums.
At Images is the complete catalogue with information about the images found in the site.
List of Albums is a shortcut to the Albums. Albums are collections of images of Greek, Roman, and Western art focusing in a character or theme.

Other presentation features

  • The genealogy of characters usually appears separated from the main text in each page.
  • Numbering of namesakes. The numbers following the names of individuals do not belong to the original names, and are for identification purposes only. The numbers are consistent throughout all texts but they do not represent a chronological order. The absence of a number indicates that there is only one mythological character with that particular name.
  • The main information about a character is found in his/her biography, but more information may be found if the character belongs to a 'Group', or even in the section Places & Peoples where the mythical history of cities (and throne succession) is narrated.
  • Charts are of different kinds:
  • The images are divided into:
  • The most important maps have been compiled in a Maps Album (PDF), but high resolution images may be acquired separately.
  • Sources are listed at the end of each page, where a link to Abbreviations is provided
  • A list of relevant or related links is usually provided in each page
  • For new material, see Additions.

A chronological strategy for the study of the myths has been outlined at Getting acquainted with the myths. Even if you choose other methods, the table provides a summary of the material and a fair number of important links conveniently organized.
